Scam (Phishing) Emails Using Honda’s name

Honda is aware of an increase in reports of scam emails, popularly called “phishing” emails, which can be job advertisements or award notifications, using Honda’s name to pretend that it is genuine,  for the purpose of obtaining private information about customers, such as personal or financial details (e.g. credit card numbers or passwords).

These scam e-mails are a new kind of fraud on the Internet.
This practice is carried out either by sending a bogus e-mail direct to the victim or by directing them to a website where information is requested,  in an attempt to steal such personal information.

A number of cases have been reported to Honda regarding deceptive e-mails using Honda’s name which have been sent to customers as described below. However, we would like to make it clear that these e-mails have no connection with Honda and we have never implemented this type of job advertising activity or award campaigns.

Honda advises that if you receive (i) an e-mail as the example described below or (ii) an e-mail using Honda’s name and asking for personal information or financial information and have concerns about its authenticity, then please treat such e-mails with extreme caution.

Some Specific Cases

Invitation from Honda’s manager
In one case, victims have received e-mails from “Honda Handel AG”, inviting them to be a financial manager for  “Honda Handel AG” and thereby collecting their personal information.
Honda does not have any relationship or connection to “Honda Handel AG”.

Award Notification
Further examples have included e-mails notifying the victim that they have won a Honda competition and need to enter personal information to receive the prize, in some cases a car.
- some examples request the payment of a sum of money for the delivery of  a car.
- some examples send a questionnaire to the victim in advance, and after that, an Award Notification is sent as a reward for the victim’s reply.
- some examples attach a picture, sign or fingerprint of one of Honda’s executives or associates on the e-mail to try and show it is genuine and authentic.

Some tips to avoid being a phishing victim

• Please treat any notification of having won a prize for a competition that you have not entered, with extreme caution
• Be careful if your personal data are requested in an email. We make back-ups of our databases, so it is almost impossible that we may have to ask you your personal data.
• Honda advises that if you receive an e-mail asking for personal information, and you have concerns about its authenticity, then please contact your local Honda office.
